Fri, Jun 26 thru Thu, Jul 2 -- Roll over to view showtimes.

Goodbye Solo

Directed by Ramin Bahrani. US. 2008. R. 91 min.

“With Goodbye Solo, writer-director Ramin Bahrani continues to channel Iranian cinema’s social-realist aesthetic and interest in marginalized figures. However, more than Abbas Kiarostami’s A Taste of Cherry, with which it shares a similar narrative hook, his third feature’s true kindred spirit turns out to be Happy-Go-Lucky.” More»

Despite living in an isolated house in the middle of a swamp–with his growling assistant Lobo (Tor Johnson), whose scars change size, shape, and position with alarming regularity–he attracts the attention of the police (Tony McCoy and Harvey Dunn); an ersatz professor who is actually a spy sent to bring him home (George Becwar); and reporter Janet Lawton (Loretta King), who is investigating mysterious disappearances in the area. Kambakkht Ishq

Directed by Sabir Khan. India. 142 min.

Presented by Bhaskar Sarikonda

  • Fri, Jul 17, 9:45 pm

“Advertised as the first Bollywood movie shot at a Hollywood studio with an appearance by a major US star, Sabbir Khan’s proudly silly Kambakkht Ishq” (“Incredible Love” in English) otherwise hews closely to a familiar Indian pattern.

There are six musical numbers in this 2½-hour action/comedy about a misogynistic stuntman (Akshay Kumar, the Adam Sandler look-alike from “Chandi Chowk to China”) who alternately bickers with and tries to bed a haughty but hot supermodel/doctor (Kareena Kapoor).

Blackface, custard pies, a musical watch accidentally left behind during surgery — Kambakkht Ishq has it all, including extended cameos by Sylvester Stallone, Denise Richards and Brandon Routh as themselves. The filmmakers also help themselves to red-carpet footage of even bigger American stars.” (Lou Lumenick, NY Post)

In English and Hindi with English subtitles.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for children. Advance tickets can be purchased at www.sulekha.com.

Sugar

Directed by Anna Boden. US. 2008. R. 120 min.

Fri, Jul 24 thru Thu, Jul 30 -- Roll over to view showtimes.

“There is something undeniably noble and beautiful about the love of sports: the appreciation of grace and excellence for their own sakes, the pleasure of competition, the discipline of training. But the practice of big-time sports is often cruel and corrupt, a business built on the exploitation of young people and the peddling of impossible dreams. This basic contradiction..is also, at least implicitly, a central concern in Sugar, a wise and lovely new film by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.” More»
