The Bishop’s Wife
Directed by Henry Koster. US. 1947. NR. 109 min. MGM. 35mm.
- Sun, Dec 2, 2:00 pm
Handsome, devil-may-care Cary Grant as an angel?! Hard to believe – but vastly entertaining to watch. In this beautifully-paced holiday classic, David Niven plays a somewhat dour and preoccupied Episcopal bishop, whose faith and his marriage (to lovely Loretta Young) seems to be faltering. Then, more or less in answer to his prayer, along comes Cary, to quite cleverly and subtly (Loretta doesn’t even know that he is From Above) help straighten things out and, as the “Motion Picture Guide” so aptly puts it, “unobtrusively help her and Niven achieve some peace on earth and goodwill towards each other.” Watch this lovely holiday picture and see why it was nominated for five Oscars, including Best Picture of 1947.
