The Quiet Man

Top director John Ford won an Oscar for this very popular film, a combined romantic-comedy and sentimental journey back to the green hills of Ireland. John Wayne plays an American prizefighter who travels back to Innisfree, Ireland, where he was born, and falls for spirited lass Maureen OHara (at her red-haired peak of loveliness), only to have to contend with the disapproval of Maureens brutish, pugnacious brother (a hulking Victor McLaglan). Besides winning Oscars for Ford and for the exquisite color cinematography, “The Quiet Man” was nominated for Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Sound and Best Supporting Actor (McLaglan). For a fun journey to the Emerald Isle, and a rousing pre-St. Pattys Day treat, this is the film to see. (Bill Roth)
