Thirteen-year-old Kayla endures the tidal wave of contemporary suburban adolescence as she makes her way through the last week of middle school—the end of her thus far disastrous eighth grade year—before she begins high school.

Please Note: Since several parent/child advocacy groups and family-focused critics recommend that eighth graders and older teens see the new film Eighth Grade, the Colonial will waive the voluntary R rating that suggests anyone below the age of 17 be accompanied by an adult. For a rating to restrict teens’ access to a rare film that depicts their lives in an accurate and mature way seems misguided especially when compared with the content of many PG-13 movies. For parents who are concerned about the film’s content, the Colonial encourages you to see it with your children and experience the film as a family as there is much to be learned and discussed. For more information concerning our decision to waive the R rating, please visit the following resources: Common Sense Media and Cinema Blend.

“Part of Eighth Grade’s charm comes from a refusal to go for easy confrontations or humiliations; it keeps threatening to become a cringe-fest, but pulls back, as Burnham opts instead for something more human and realistic. There’s a lived-in wisdom in the film.” – Bilge Ebiri, The Village Voice

“You’re going to fall in love with Elsie Fisher. As the breakout star and big, beating heart of Bo Burnham’s feature directorial debut, “Eighth Grade,” Fisher is tasked with carrying an entire film — an achingly real, firmly modern coming-of-age tale – with honesty and vulnerability to spare.” – Kate Erbland, IndieWire
