The first English-language film from legendary director Jacques Demy (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg), Model Shop is a cinematic snapshot of 1969 Los Angeles. Things are not going well for George (Gary Lockwood, 2001: A Space Odyssey). He’s an unemployed architect, with a soon-to-be-ex-girlfriend, a car threatened with repossession, and a looming draft notice. Feeling hopeless about his future, George meets a French model who may be a kindred spirit. Ignored upon release, Model Shop has experienced a recent resurgence thanks to the documentary Echo in the Canyon and the praise of Quentin Tarantino (who cites it as a direct influence on his recent hit Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood).
