Tom Hanks won the first of two back-to-back Best Actor Oscars for his work in this modern masterpiece. Fired from a prestigious law firm shortly after his colleagues discover his illness, HIV+ lawyer Andrew Beckett (Hanks) seeks the counsel of the only professional in town willing to take his discrimination case – homophobic personal injury lawyer Joe Miller (Denzel Washington). In addition to Hanks’ win, Philadelphia also took home an Oscar for Bruce Springsteen’s song “The Streets of Philadelphia.”
