Patricia “Pinky” Johnson (Jeanne Crain) is an African-American nurse who passes as white while attending school in the North. After an unsuspecting doctor proposes marriage, Patricia flees to her home in the South and heeds the advice of her grandmother (Ethel Waters) who warns her of the potential dangers she faces if her secret is revealed. An early film from director Elia Kazan (On the Waterfront, A Streetcar Named Desire), Pinky is as controversial and powerful now as the day it was released.
