In 1183, King Henry II (Peter O’Toole) plans to announce his successor during his Christmas celebration. Although he has three sons, he favors Prince John (Nigel Terry). Queen Eleanor (Katharine Hepburn in an Oscar winning performance), his recently imprisoned wife, believes their son Prince Richard (Anthony Hopkins) should be king. As various conniving family members and insiders gather for the feast, complex webs of deceit and double-crosses are being woven behind the king’s back. Based on the acclaimed play, this film adaptation also features Timothy Dalton as the King of France.
