Feature Films:
Bigger Stronger Faster
Directed by Chris Bell. US. 2008. PG-13. Running time: 105 min.
A good documentary will take you places you didn't plan to go, but I didn't really expect that from Bigger, Stronger, Faster, an incisive and compulsively watchable look at America's love affair with steroids. The film kicks off with a montage of the cheesetastic stars of the 1980s. There's a pile-driving Hulk Hogan, a bare-torsoed Sly Stallone strafing his enemies in Rambo, and Arnold Schwarzenegger flexing his veiny, condom-filled-with-coconuts biceps. These ripped and snarling muscleheads incarnated the new, pumped-up American might of the Reagan era, with Gold's Gym in L.A. as their training mecca, and Christopher Bell, the director of Bigger, Stronger, Faster, lets us know how much they meant to him as a kid.

Classic Films:
Little Miss Sunshine
Directed by Jonathan Dayton. US. 2006. R. Running time: 101 min.
“A scrappy human comedy that takes an honest path to laughs and is twice as funny and touching for it. First-time screenwriter Michael Arndt — remember the name — has lucked out with a dream cast. Besides Breslin, there's Greg Kinnear as Dad, a motivational speaker nearing meltdown, and as Mom the superb Toni Collette, just the actress to expose the fissures in a marriage with a glance. Along for the ride are Paul Dano as their alienated teen son, Alan Arkin as Dad's junkie father and a deadpan-hilarious Steve Carell as Mom's brother, a Proust scholar who's been suicidal since his studly boyfriend dumped him.

City Rhythm Orchestra: Satchmo and the Duke
Tickets: $25 / $20 for members.
The 15-piece City Rhythm Orchestra returns to the Colonial to present “Satchmo and the Duke” - the music of jazz pioneers Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. Louis Armstrong’s amazing technical abilities, inventive improvisation, and personal exuberance came to define jazz itself. He is clearly the father of this American classical music. The City Rhythm Orchestra’s first set will highlight classics from his 50 year career featuring band’s talented trumpet players. While “Satchmo” established jazz as a unique musical genre, Duke Ellington raised it to an art form.
