Capote
Directed by Bennett Miller. US. 2005. R. Running time: 114 min.
“At one point in Capote, Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Truman Capote mockingly reads Catherine Keener’s Harper Lee an acceptance speech that convicted killer Perry Smith wrote just in case he ever won an award. Lee is understandably horrified by the narcissism on display, but it’s Capote’s narcissism that makes her recoil, not Smith’s. Bennett Miller’s Capote is at heart a cautionary tale about the way narcissism can poison relationships and warp values. In Hoffman’s haunting, dead-on Capote, it boasts an anti-hero whose self-infatuation borders on pathological.

First Friday Fright Night:
Grizzly
Directed by William Girdler. US. 1976. PG. Running time: 91 min.
Although monster movies had been around since the dawn of film, they were mostly used to fill the bottom half of a double feature or to keep drive-ins stocked with a schlock. It wasn’t until a young director named Steven Spielberg figured out that you could take a B-movie template and use it to make an A-level production. All you needed was a cast of amazing actors, a screenwriter with a background in improv comedy, a memorable score, brilliant editing, a large budget, and an ability to adapt to and overcome the challenges of filming at sea with a mechanical shark that seldom worked. The result was “Jaws.” After that film’s raging success, it didn’t take long for the imitators to hit screens. And if imitation is the highest form of flattery, then the guys who made “Grizzly” must have worshipped “Jaws.”

Unwound
Directed by Michael Marabella. $5. Buy tickets online. Running time: 25 min.
UNWOUND is a short film based on a cassette tape diary from the 1970s, rediscovered in 2011 by director Michael Marabella. The tape contained the collected thoughts and musings of a young woman who referred to herself only as “K.R.,” recorded over a four-month period in 1976. UNWOUND features four different entries from the tape adapted for film, each entry conceptualized and executed by a different cast and crew. Each director worked from the source material of the 1976 cassette tape, their segments influenced by their own impressions of K.R. The film will be followed by a Q&A with the director. Tickets are $5. Doors open at 8PM and the film starts at 8:30PM.

This screening is FREE with your purchase of a ticket to see “Jaws!” There are very few films in the history of cinema that can be considered perfect. “Jaws” is, without a doubt, one of them. Plagued with production problems of all sorts “Jaws” emerged as the first summer blockbuster and changed movies forever. This is a true classic of the silver screen and one of the most quotable movies of all time. Get to the theater early because there is a good chance “we’re going to need a bigger boat.” (Bob Trate)
