In conjunction with our screening of Blow Out, Film Programming & Membership Manager (and noted De Palma acolyte) Dan Santelli will host a 45-minute, spoiler-free pre-screening seminar on Brian De Palma’s incendiary masterpiece before the screening.

Shot in and around the City of Brotherly Love, Blow Out finds De Palma working at the height of his powers, transforming a Hitchcockian thriller scenario predicated on an Antonionian premise into a paranoid meditation on political corruption, media manipulation, and the fragility of truth. Drawing on clips, historical context, and close analysis, Dan will explore De Palma’s mastery as a visual storyteller, place Blow Out within the context of his career and post–New Hollywood American cinema, discuss the film’s artistic influences and enduring legacy, and consider why it remains one of the defining American films of the 1980s.
