About
Juneteenth is a Federal Holiday that marks the date in 1865 when word reached Texas, more than two years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, that slavery had been abolished and those enslaved were free. Learn more about Juneteenth here from the museum scholars of the National Museum of African American History & Culture of the Smithsonian.
