Phoenixville Celebrates Juneteenth
The Phoenixville Juneteenth Committee PresentsWe hope you will join us on the afternoon of Sunday, June 16th in downtown Phoenixville, as we celebrate Juneteenth National Freedom Day together as a community with excitement and great joy!
About
Juneteenth National Freedom Day illuminates the fact that slaves celebrated the abolishment of slavery with excitement and great joy. It is a reminder to all Americans of the status and importance of Americans of African descent as American citizens. For more than 140 years, Juneteenth National Freedom Day has been the oldest African American holiday observed in the United States.
Juneteenth celebrations began in Phoenixville in 2002, experienced a hiatus and returned in to our community in 2021 with a week-long series of virtual events that were educational, entertaining, and inspirational!
This year on Sunday, June 16, between 2 and 6 pm, the Phoenixville Juneteenth Committee (Diversity In Action, Black Light Projects, Orion Communities, The Colonial Theatre, the Phoenixville Community Health Foundation, and Trellis for Tomorrow) has organized a special collection of activities to engage the community and shed light on the importance of African American history in the United States and our community. We will commemorate this important date with historical re-enactors, music, art, dance, drummers, street theater, magic, Soul food, and storytelling. The events will take place on the 200 block of Bridge Street in Phoenixville.
Please also consider donating as we bring this celebration to downtown Phoenixville to raise awareness, educate our community, and honor local and national African American citizens.
Let’s celebrate together!!!
