About
“One of the greatest films of all-time.” — Pauline Kael
“PERHAPS THE QUINTESSENTIAL WORK OF ITALIAN NEOREALISM. Revealing the catastrophic impact of seemingly minor events on people who are struggling to subsist, De Sica endows slender side business and incidental pictorial details with high suspense and tragic grandeur. He transforms the sheer scale of the city and the vast number of residents in similarly desperate straits into a symphonic lament for the human condition.” — Richard Brody, The New Yorker
SYNOPSIS
A landmark of Italian neorealism and one of the most celebrated achievements in cinema history, Vittorio De Sica’s profoundly moving drama captures the struggles of ordinary people in the aftermath of World War II. In economically devastated Rome, unemployed laborer Antonio Ricci (Lamberto Maggiorani) finally secures a job posting advertisements, only to have his bicycle, essential to his livelihood, stolen on his first day. Accompanied by his young son Bruno (Enzo Staiola), Antonio embarks on an increasingly desperate search through the city’s bustling streets, markets, and working-class neighborhoods. Working from a screenplay co-written by Cesare Zavattini, De Sica employs nonprofessional actors, authentic locations, and an unadorned visual style to illuminate the devastating consequences of poverty and economic insecurity. Balancing intimate human drama with a compassionate examination of postwar Italian society, this deceptively simple masterpiece explores the fragile boundaries between dignity and desperation, culminating in one of cinema’s most heartbreaking conclusions.
