    SYNOPSIS

    Director Herbert Ross locates this dramedy within the rituals of a small-town Louisiana beauty salon, where a tight-knit circle of women gather to gossip, spar, and sustain one another in the conspicuous absence of men. What unfolds is a deceptively modest ensemble piece built on a cascade of barbed one-liners and epigrams, as friendships deepen across weddings, illness, and loss, gradually revealing the emotional architecture that binds them together. Adapting Robert Harling’s play, Ross balances caustic humor with mounting pathos, allowing comedy to accumulate toward moments of genuine rupture. Anchored by a formidable cast (Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Daryl Hannah, and Julia Roberts), each performance locates strength beneath surface charm, embodying the paradox of the “steel magnolia”: outwardly delicate, inwardly unbreakable.
