Stanley Kubrick’s final masterpiece fuses romantic thriller and pitch-black comedy into a waking nightmare where fantasy and reality continually bleed into each other. After an admission of imagined desire unsettles his marriage, Dr. Bill Harford (Tom Cruise) drifts through a stylized, dream-logic New York, moving from erotic temptation to paranoia to the opaque rituals of a privileged elite. Through ritualistic repetitions, Freudian echoes, and an eerily omniscient camera that seems to know more than its protagonist ever can, Kubrick shapes a hypnotic study of class, desire, moral self-delusion, and the porous boundary between dreams and waking life.
