About
“Kiki’s slow pace and light-on-conflict plot may surprise kids used to American animation, but it’s difficult not to be won over by the film’s endearing characters and beautiful animation, as well as a storyline that stresses the values of independence and friendship.” — Keith Phipps, The A.V. Club
SYNOPSIS
Hayao Miyazaki conjures a world of gentle enchantment and everyday wonder in Kiki’s Delivery Service, a luminous coming-of-age fable from Studio Ghibli. Leaving home at thirteen to complete her training as a witch, the spirited Kiki settles in a picturesque seaside city with her wisecracking black cat Jiji, establishing a flying delivery service while navigating the challenges of independence, friendship, and self-discovery. Adapted from Eiko Kadono’s beloved novel, Miyazaki’s film finds magic in the ordinary pleasures and disappointments of growing up, treating loneliness, creative exhaustion, and self-doubt with uncommon sensitivity. Its exquisitely detailed animation lends even the most mundane encounters a quiet, restorative beauty. Warmhearted without being sentimental, Kiki’s Delivery Service offers a reassuring vision of maturity, suggesting that happiness and self-confidence emerge not from avoiding life’s difficulties but from learning to persevere through them.
