    About

“There are great films and then there are magical films, glorious oddities that pop up sui generis out of nowhere. Sleepaway Camp falls squarely into the latter category.” — Scott Tobias, The Dissolve

    ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Join cult filmmaker and drag icon Peaches Christ, Sleepaway Camp star Felissa Rose, and filmmaker and podcaster Michael Varrati for an unforgettable evening celebrating one of the most gloriously shocking horror films of all time!

The event begins with a live pre-show featuring performances, conversation, behind-the-scenes stories, audience participation, and a 1980s Camp Costume Contest, followed by a screening of Sleepaway Camp. A limited VIP Meet & Greet experience will also be available.

    FILM SYNOPSIS

Summer camp has rarely seemed stranger than in Robert Hiltzik’s glorious cult favorite, an alternately gruesome, hilarious, and genuinely unnerving entry in the golden age of the American slasher. After a childhood tragedy leaves her orphaned, painfully shy Angela (Felissa Rose) is sent with her protective cousin Ricky (Jonathan Tiersten) to Camp Arawak, where the usual assortment of adolescent crushes, petty rivalries, bullying, and spectacularly inappropriate adult behavior soon gives way to a succession of increasingly grisly deaths. Hiltzik devotes as much attention to the peculiar rhythms of summer-camp life as he does to the murders, surrounding Angela with an unforgettable collection of teenage tormentors, sleazy counselors, eccentric authority figures, and well-meaning misfits whose casual cruelties steadily poison an already unstable environment. The result plays almost as much like a raunchy camp comedy as a horror film, yet beneath its quotable dialogue and hangout pleasures runs an unmistakable sensation that something is profoundly wrong. Building toward one of the most notorious endings in horror history, Sleepaway Camp remains funny, nasty, deeply uncomfortable, and possessed of an ineffable strangeness that makes it a contender for one of the greatest American slasher films of the 1980s.
