About
“CRITIC’S PICK: An exquisite debut feature.” — Alissa Wilkinson, The New York Times
“Its boldly distinctive method is inseparable from its emotional vitality, and its audacious sense of form is as immediate and personal as the story it tells. It’s a memory-film that captures inner life with physical style: patience, speed, precision, and breathtaking leaps.” — Richard Brody, The New Yorker
SYNOPSIS
Set in British Columbia across the span of a 1990s summer, Canadian maverick Sophy Romvari’s debut feature traces childhood memory through the eyes of Sasha, whose family life is shaped by the increasingly volatile behavior of her older brother Jeremy. Blending domestic observation with fragmented recollection, it follows small ruptures (private tensions, quiet fears, and moments of instability) that gradually reveal the emotional weight borne by everyone around him. Moving between intimate family drama and meditations on memory itself, Blue Heron approaches the past as something partial, elusive, and deeply felt.
