SYNOPSIS

Master filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa (no relation to Akira) ventures into the samurai film for the first time with an intricately constructed historical mystery that finds the director of Cure and Pulse on unexpectedly familiar ground. Set in 1578 during Japan’s war-torn Sengoku period, The Samurai and the Prisoner follows warlord Murashige Araki (Masahiro Motoki), whose rebellion against the powerful Nobunaga Oda leaves his fortress under siege and strategist Kanbei Kuroda (Masaki Suda) imprisoned in its dungeon. As a succession of seemingly inexplicable deaths unsettles the stronghold, Murashige turns to his brilliant captive to unravel mysteries that appear to defy earthly explanation. Divided across four seasons and unfolding with Kurosawa’s characteristically patient, unnerving precision, this elegant puzzle box trades sweeping battlefield spectacle for locked rooms, deductive reasoning, and philosophical inquiry, using its Agatha Christie-like mysteries to probe the samurai code, religious faith, political power, and the machinery of war.
