    One of the foundational nightmares of the cinema, F.W. Murnau’s unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula remains among the most haunting interpretations of the vampire myth ever committed to film. Max Schreck gives an unforgettable performance as Count Orlok, the cadaverous vampire whose journey from his remote Transylvanian castle brings pestilence, death, and an ever-lengthening shadow to the German town of Wisborg. Rather than confining Expressionism to artificial studio sets, Murnau finds the uncanny within the natural world itself, using stark locations, startling camera placement, negative imagery, accelerated motion, and extraordinarily expressive montage to make familiar landscapes seem suddenly possessed. A landmark of horror whose influence still courses through the genre, Nosferatu demonstrates Murnau’s singular ability to make architecture, landscape, light, and shadow appear as alive (and threatening) as the monster himself.

    THE ORGANIST

    Dennis James has devoted more than five decades to the art of silent-film accompaniment and theatrical organ performance. A Philadelphia native and former staff organist at the Wanamaker Grand Court Organ, he has accompanied silent films at venues and institutions around the world, including Radio City Music Hall, the Sydney Opera House, the Louvre Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Library of Congress. Renowned for his sensitivity to the rhythms, moods, and dramatic contours of the moving image, James approaches accompaniment as an interpretive art, using music to deepen and illuminate the experience of the film. An internationally recognized authority on historically informed silent-film accompaniment, James brings his singular artistry to the TOSDV Wurlitzer for this special presentation of F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu (1922).
