SYNOPSIS

Carl Theodor Dreyer’s silent masterpiece remains the definitive cinematic account of the trial and martyrdom of Joan of Arc. Drawing directly from the historical trial transcripts, the film strips away pageantry in favor of an intense confrontation between faith, power, and conscience, anchored by Maria Falconetti’s extraordinary performance as the doomed saint. Through radical close-ups, disorienting editing, and a daring reconfiguration of cinematic space, Dreyer transforms Joan’s ordeal into an experience of overwhelming spiritual and emotional immediacy. Long believed lost after the destruction of its original negatives and only rediscovered in a Norwegian mental institution decades later, The Passion of Joan of Arc endures as one of the supreme achievements of silent cinema.
