Among the strangest and most perturbing films of his overlooked Mexican period, Él is Luis Buñuel’s incisive portrait of paranoia, jealousy, and sexual obsession—a nightmarish tale of love gone wrong that prefigures the major themes of his 1960s and ’70s work. Incorporating his personal demons into an adaptation of Mercedes Pinto’s autobiographical novel, Buñuel tells the story of Francisco Galván de Montemayor (Arturo de Córdova), a devout middle-aged bachelor who falls into amour fou with Gloria (Delia Garcés). After breaking her engagement with another man, Gloria realizes something is terribly off about Francisco, whose sophisticated facade masks deep insecurities and an explosive, violent temper. Descending into madness, Francisco drives Gloria to fear for her life—with no refuge offered by either her family or the church. One of Buñuel’s rawest, angriest indictments of religious and social hypocrisy, Él stands as the surrealist master’s great excursion into dark melodrama, where civilization can find no answer to the raging urges of the irrational id.

Entre las películas más extrañas y perturbadoras de su olvidada etapa mexicana, Él es el incisivo retrato de Luis Buñuel sobre la paranoia, los celos y la obsesión sexual: una pesadilla sobre un amor que salió mal que prefigura los temas principales de su obra de las décadas de 1960 y 1970. Incorporando sus demonios personales en una adaptación de la novela autobiográfica de Mercedes Pinto, Buñuel cuenta la historia de Francisco Galván de Montemayor (Arturo de Córdova), un devoto soltero de mediana edad que se enamora de Gloria (Delia Garcés). Tras romper su compromiso con otro hombre, Gloria se da cuenta de que algo anda terriblemente mal con Francisco, cuya fachada sofisticada enmascara profundas inseguridades y un temperamento explosivo y violento. Cayendo en la locura, Francisco lleva a Gloria a temer por su vida, sin que ni su familia ni la iglesia le ofrezcan refugio. Una de las acusaciones más crudas y furiosas de Buñuel a la hipocresía religiosa y social, es la gran excursión del maestro surrealista hacia el melodrama oscuro, donde la civilización no puede encontrar respuesta a los impulsos furiosos del ello irracional.

The Madrigal family lives in an enchanted place, somewhere in Colombia, in this animated fantasy adventure. Mirabel (voice of Stephanie Beatriz – Half Magic) feels like an outcast in the family, being the only one who doesn’t have a magical power. Her mother, for example, can heal with food, and one of her sisters, Luisa (voice of Jessica Darrow) has super strength. When the family suddenly starts to lose their powers, it’s time for Maribel to look inside herself for her own special ability that might just save them all. The film also boasts a spirited lineup of original songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton).
