In conjunction with our screening of Michael Mann’s Heat, Film Programming Manager Dan Santelli will host a 45-minute, spoiler-free pre-screening seminar on this masterful entry in the American crime cinema canon.

A sprawling Los Angeles crime epic that brings together Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in one of the most celebrated confrontations in modern Hollywood filmmaking, Heat is both a masterclass in action filmmaking and a richly textured examination of professionalism, masculine identity, obsession, and the personal sacrifices demanded by an all-consuming vocation. Drawing on clips, genre studies, and close analysis, Dan will examine Mann’s distinctive approach to filmmaking, exploring the film’s rich thematic concerns, visual and stylistic sophistication, and place within Mann’s larger body of work and the traditions of American crime cinema.
