Heat (1995)

About

“It’s a great-looking Los Angeles thriller with an irresistible plot (workaholic master detective tracks down workaholic master thief; feels like he is looking in a living mirror); an amazing ensemble cast; one of the best-edited shoot-out scenes you’ll ever see; and all kinds of Mann-erisms that split the difference between effortless, alpha-male cool and mawkish sentimentality.” — Adam Nayman, The Ringer

SYNOPSIS

American auteur Michael Mann brings his career-long fascination with professionalism, codes, and masculine obsession to monumental scale in this masterful Los Angeles crime epic. Al Pacino and Robert De Niro play Vincent Hanna and Neil McCauley, a relentless LAPD detective and methodical career thief whose opposing pursuits gradually reveal them as mirror images: men defined so completely by their work that intimacy becomes another casualty of the lives they have chosen. Mann renders Los Angeles as a vast modernist dreamscape of glass, steel, freeways, and nocturnal light, punctuating moments of aching solitude with bursts of startling violence, including one of the most celebrated shootouts in American cinema. At once muscular and melancholy, Heat finds profound sadness beneath its macho romanticism, tracing the inexorable paths of men who understand the cost of their personal codes but remain tragically incapable of breaking them.
