About
Philadelphia Folksong Society presents the 2nd Annual Gene Shay/Founders’ Awards Benefit Concert. We will be honoring David Bromberg, “the Godfather of Americana,” along with Folk Legend Tom Rush!
Musical acts for the evening include Jay Ungar & Molly Mason (perhaps best known for Ashokan Farewell from Ken Burns’ Civil War series), the wonderful Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams, and yes, Tom Rush! In lieu of a performance by David Bromberg, the night will feature a musical tribute to his iconic catalogue of songs.
In addition to presenting our two Founders’ Awards to David Bromberg and Tom Rush for their lifetime musical achievements, the Society will also present our Gene Shay Awards. These awards will honor two beloved Folk Festival volunteers: our recently departed and dear friend Mike Flagg, and the late Ellen Superfine (Folk Fest’s Wonder Woman), both recognized for their lifelong and dedicated service. New this year, we will also present our first Volunteer Committee Spotlight Award to the Philadelphia Folk Festival’s unheralded Trash Committee!
This is a fundraising event benefitting the Philadelphia Folksong Society and its community programs, including the Philadelphia Folk Festival on August 15-17, 2025 at Old Pool Farm in Upper Salford Twp. Please join us in securing the future of folk music for generations to come!
Founded in 1957, the Philadelphia Folksong Society is dedicated to preserving the past, promoting the present, and securing the future of folk music and related forms of expression through education, presentation and participation.
