About
“The movie advances in a tantalizing fashion, supplying information obliquely, suggesting as much as it tells, and everything leads up to a climax that is as horrifying as it is probably inevitable.” — Roger Ebert
SYNOPSIS
George Sluizer’s celebrated Dutch thriller transforms an everyday nightmare into an extraordinarily unsettling chiller. While vacationing in France, a young couple’s lives are shattered when Saskia (Johanna ter Steege) vanishes without a trace from a highway rest stop. Years later, her boyfriend Rex (Gene Bervoets), still consumed by the mystery, is approached by a seemingly ordinary man (Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu) who claims to know exactly what happened. Eschewing conventional shocks in favor of mounting psychological dread, Sluizer crafts a profoundly disturbing meditation on obsession, evil, and the terrifying banality of both. Reportedly a favorite of Stanley Kubrick, who considered it among the most frightening films ever made, The Vanishing is best experienced knowing as little as possible.
Presented in its original Dutch and French language track with English subtitles.
