About

“There are few concert movies that were filmed were such abiding feeling and respect. It’s of a potent vintage that goes down deceptively smoother with age.” — A.O. Scott, The New York Times

 SYNOPSIS

More than a concert film, Martin Scorsese’s The Last Waltz plays as both celebration and farewell, capturing the Band’s final performance at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom on Thanksgiving night, 1976. Joined by an extraordinary roster of guests—including Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, Neil Young, and the Staple Singers—the group moves through a set that feels at once communal, mythic, and unmistakably elegiac. Working with cinematographer Michael Chapman and a remarkable camera team that included Vilmos Zsigmond and László Kovács, Scorsese brings an unprecedented visual sophistication to the concert film, staging rock and roll with the grandeur and intimacy of dramatic cinema. The result is a richly textured portrait of a band, a generation, and an era already beginning to pass into memory.
