The Thing (1982)

35mm Screening

About

“This is one of the greatest and most elegantly constructed B-movies ever made, serious yet subtle in exploring themes of paranoia, mistrust, identity and camaraderie, and aces at scaring the hell out of you. Carpenter is one of the great film stylists of the second half of the twentieth century. He directs with no adjectives. He’s clean, purposeful, direct, unhurried.” — Matt Zoller Seitz, RogerEbert.com

SYNOPSIS

John Carpenter’s Antarctic nightmare finds the director returning to the intimate “social unit under siege” template of Halloween and Assault on Precinct 13, only to explode it onto a cosmic scale. Kurt Russell stars as the helicopter pilot stationed at an isolated Antarctic research base where the discovery of an extraterrestrial organism gives way to escalating paranoia as the creature proves capable of perfectly imitating any living host. Marrying Dean Cundey’s icy Cinemascope photography, Ennio Morricone’s ominous score, and Rob Bottin’s astonishing practical effects, Carpenter locates his deepest horrors not merely in bodily mutation but in the collapse of trust itself. Bleak, relentless, and suffused with cosmic dread, The Thing stands not only as one of the greatest horror films ever made, but as one of American cinema’s most uncompromising visions of paranoia, isolation, and existential despair.

The Thing will screen on a 35mm archival print, courtesy of Universal.
