Jane Eyre (2011) – Craft Cinema
About
“A splendid example of how to tackle the daunting duty of turning a beloved work of classic literature into a movie. Neither a radical updating nor a stiff exercise in middlebrow cultural respectability, Mr. Fukunaga’s film tells its venerable tale with lively vigor and an astute sense of emotional detail.” — A.O. Scott, The New York Times
SYNOPSIS
Cary Joji Fukunaga brings a haunting Gothic sensibility to Charlotte Brontë’s beloved novel in this visually sumptuous adaptation of one of literature’s most enduring romances. Mia Wasikowska stars as Jane Eyre, a fiercely independent young governess whose troubled childhood gives way to an unexpected passion for her brooding employer, Edward Rochester (Michael Fassbender), the enigmatic master of Thornfield Hall. As their relationship deepens, disturbing secrets threaten to destroy their fragile happiness. Eschewing the sentimental conventions of the period romance, Fukunaga emphasizes the novel’s darker undercurrents of psychological torment, repression, and forbidden desire, conjuring an atmosphere of supernatural unease amid the windswept landscapes of Victorian England. Adriano Goldman’s evocative cinematography and Dario Marianelli’s melancholy score complement the smoldering chemistry between Wasikowska and Fassbender. Both an intensely romantic love story and a compelling portrait of female autonomy, this elegant adaptation captures the turbulent emotional and psychological complexities of Brontë’s literary masterpiece.
