Little Women (2019) – Craft Cinema
About
“Like any good novelist and every great filmmaker, Gerwig isn’t afraid to let her audience work a little. She trusts our intelligence and our curiosity, and also her own command of the medium.” — A.O. Scott, The New York Times
SYNOPSIS
Greta Gerwig breathes exhilarating new life into Louisa May Alcott’s beloved novel with a spirited, emotionally rich adaptation that finds fresh urgency in its timeless questions of love, ambition, and female independence. Saoirse Ronan leads an extraordinary ensemble as Jo March, an aspiring writer coming of age alongside her three sisters, Meg (Emma Watson), Amy (Florence Pugh), and Beth (Eliza Scanlen), in Civil War-era Massachusetts. Moving fluidly between the sisters’ childhood and adulthood, Gerwig reimagines the familiar story through an inventive nonlinear structure, juxtaposing youthful aspirations with the compromises and disappointments of maturity. With its luminous period detail, overlapping dialogue, and affectionate attention to the rhythms of family life, Little Women balances irrepressible warmth and humor with a sharp examination of the economic and social constraints imposed upon women. Featuring Laura Dern, Timothée Chalamet, and Meryl Streep, Gerwig’s adaptation is at once a loving tribute to Alcott’s enduring characters and a quietly radical meditation on artistic autonomy and the right to determine one’s own destiny.
