Home Alone (1990)
About
SYNOPSIS
Christmas becomes a battleground of booby traps, bruised egos, and spectacular bodily punishment in Chris Columbus’s Home Alone, the irresistible holiday comedy that made Macaulay Culkin a household name. Accidentally abandoned when his enormous family departs for Paris, eight-year-old Kevin McCallister (Culkin) initially revels in his newfound independence, indulging in forbidden pleasures and enjoying the run of the house without parental supervision. But when two bumbling burglars (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) target the seemingly deserted residence, Kevin turns his suburban home into an elaborate gauntlet of improvised weapons, ingenious traps, and increasingly outrageous slapstick violence. Working from a screenplay by John Hughes, Columbus combines the anarchic physical comedy of classic cartoons with the cozy sentimentality of an old-fashioned Christmas movie, while the late Catherine O’Hara lends genuine emotional urgency to the frantic efforts of Kevin’s mother to return home. Beneath the flying paint cans, shattered ornaments, and scorched flesh lies a surprisingly tender story about childhood independence, familial belonging, and discovering what matters most when everyone else is gone.
