About
“With Carrey hitting a career peak, this Grinch doesn’t steal Christmas; it restores the season by helping energize us enough to make it through the whole thing.” — Jay Carr, Boston Globe
SYNOPSIS
Dr. Seuss’s beloved holiday curmudgeon receives a spectacularly extravagant big-screen makeover in Ron Howard’s live-action adaptation, a riot of candy-colored production design, grotesque prosthetics, and Jim Carrey’s rubber-faced comic anarchy. High above the bustling town of Whoville, the reclusive Grinch (Carrey) nurses a lifelong resentment toward Christmas and its relentlessly cheerful celebrants, whose seasonal excesses have turned the holiday into an orgy of consumption and competitive gift-giving. When the compassionate Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen) attempts to welcome him back into the community, old humiliations resurface, inspiring an elaborate scheme to rob Whoville of every last present, decoration, and Christmas feast. Howard brings Seuss’s fantastical illustrations to life through towering storybook sets, outlandish costumes, and a dizzying assortment of visual gags, while Carrey attacks the title role with manic physicality and gleeful misanthropy. Beneath its exuberant spectacle and irreverent humor, How the Grinch Stole Christmas preserves the essential warmth of Seuss’s fable, suggesting that the holiday’s true pleasures have little to do with the presents piled beneath the tree.
