35mm Screening

About

“Here is still another illustration of the old Hollywood noir principle that a movie lives its life not through its hero, but within its shadows…the entire film, in fact, seems much more real than the usual action-crime-chase concoctions we’ve grown tired of. Here is a movie with respect for writing, acting and craft. It has respect for knowledgeable moviegoers.” — Roger Ebert

“The film is little more than an exercise in style, but it’s dazzling and mythic, a testament to the fundamental appeal of fast cars, dangerous men, and tension that squeezes like a hand to the throat.” — Scott Tobias, The A.V. Club

SYNOPSIS

Nicolas Winding Refn’s sleek neo-noir fairy tale quickly established itself as a modern cult classic. Ryan Gosling stars as the Driver, a Hollywood stuntman and getaway wheelman whose carefully compartmentalized existence begins to unravel after he becomes entangled with his neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan) and her recently paroled husband. Drawing equally from the existential cool of 1970s crime cinema and the neon-drenched stylization of European art film, Refn bathes Los Angeles in pink skies, chrome reflections, and sudden eruptions of shocking violence, recasting the city as a nocturnal dreamscape. Beneath its immaculate surfaces lies a melancholy meditation on loneliness, masculinity, and the impossibility of escaping one’s own mythology.
