Dolly Parton’s larger-than-life screen presence takes center stage in Colin Higgins’s exuberant adaptation of the smash Broadway musical The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Parton stars as Miss Mona Stangley, the warmhearted proprietor of the Chicken Ranch, a venerable Texas brothel whose comfortable relationship with the surrounding community is threatened when a crusading television reporter (Dom DeLuise) turns it into the target of a statewide moral scandal. Burt Reynolds co-stars as Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd, Mona’s longtime friend and lover, in a rambunctious mixture of romantic comedy, good-old-boy farce, and country-and-western musical spectacle that also features Charles Durning’s show-stopping turn as the politically evasive governor. But the movie belongs to Dolly, whose humor, generosity, glamour, and unmistakable emotional sincerity shine through every rhinestone-studded frame, culminating in her achingly beautiful rendition of “I Will Always Love You.” Presented in loving memory of Dolly Parton, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas offers an opportunity to celebrate an entertainer whose singular warmth and talent made the world a little brighter.
