After the success of The Nightmare Before Christmas, director Henry Selick and producer Tim Burton reunited to adapt one of Roald Dahl’s most beloved and delightfully macabre children’s novels. Blending live action with exquisitely crafted stop-motion animation, James and the Giant Peach follows a lonely young boy who escapes his cruel guardians aboard a colossal peach inhabited by a troupe of oversized insect companions. Retaining Dahl’s signature mixture of dark humor, melancholy, and whimsy, Selick crafts a visually inventive fantasy that balances wide-eyed wonder with a morbid edge, resulting in one of the most distinctive family films of the 1990s.
