Halloween (1978)

About

Halloween is an absolutely merciless thriller…I would compare it to Psycho.” — Roger Ebert

“A tour de force, perhaps the most widely imitated film of the 70s…Carpenter displays an almost perfect understanding of the mechanics of classical suspense; his style draws equally (and intelligently) from both Howard Hawks and Alfred Hitchcock.” — Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader

SYNOPSIS

John Carpenter’s epochal horror classic forever changed the course of American genre cinema, establishing the template for the modern slasher film while remaining unmatched by the countless imitators that followed. On Halloween night in the quiet suburb of Haddonfield, Illinois, escaped mental patient Michael Myers returns home to stalk teenage babysitter Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and anyone unfortunate enough to cross his path. Working with remarkable economy and precision despite severe budgetary constraints, Carpenter recasts ordinary streets, suburban homes, and quiet autumn evenings as landscapes of mounting terror through elegant widescreen compositions, gliding Steadicam photography, and one of the most unforgettable scores ever composed for a horror film. Equal parts suspense masterpiece and exercise in pure cinematic style, Halloween stands as one of the most influential and frightening American films ever made.
