The safety of home becomes something altogether more sinister in Rob Savage’s Other Mommy, a nightmarish excursion into childhood fear produced by modern horror heavyweight James Wan (Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring). Arabella Olivia Clark stars as Bela, a young girl who begins communicating with a mysterious presence inside her family’s home—an entity that looks disturbingly like her mother and gradually insinuates itself into the child’s increasingly uncertain world. Jessica Chastain takes on the film’s unnerving dual role as Bela’s mother and her uncanny double, opposite Jay Duplass as Bela’s father, with Dichen Lachman, Arian Moayed, and Karen Allen rounding out the ensemble. Adapting Josh Malerman’s bestselling novel Incidents Around the House from a screenplay by Succession writer Nathan Elston, Savage (Host, The Boogeyman) returns to the intimate spaces in which his horror works best, exploiting the instability of a child’s perspective to make familiar rooms, parental faces, and the reassuring boundaries of family life suddenly suspect. Other Mommy finds terror in a primal childhood question: what if the person who looks like Mom isn’t Mom at all?
