Historic Phoenixville theater’s Halloween film fest goes online

PHOENIXVILLE (KYW Newsradio) — The Phoenixville theater featured in 1958 sci-fi classic film “The Blob” is staging its first Halloween film festival later this week.

All the programming will be available online because of COVID-19 restrictions on public gatherings.

It’s being billed as “A Nightmare on Bridge Street,” playing off the historic theater’s location.

Bob Trate, the Colonial Theatre’s marketing manager, said this Saturday night’s event will feature cartoons and movies to watch with friends and family from home.

“We’re showing ‘The Bat,’ which stars Vincent Price and Agnes Moorehead, which is a fun thriller. And you can’t have Halloween without Vincent Price somewhere,” Trate said.

“And, we’re going to show Ed Wood’s ‘Plan 9 from Outer Space,’ which has zombies and aliens. And, then Francis Ford Coppola’s very first film, ‘Dementia 13.’ And then, of course, George A. Romero’s ‘Night of the Living Dead’ will round out our evening.”

And Trate said there will be some bonuses, too. For one: a t-shirt to commemorate the event.

And moviegoers will be able to chat via instant messaging platform Discord.

“You can actually interact with people and chat and comment on the movie. And it’s your chance to talk during the movie, technically, without talking during the movie.”

If Saturday night doesn’t work, Trate says, don’t despair.

“We’re going to keep the livestream up through the weekend, so you’ll have until midnight on Sunday night to watch it,” Trate said.
