SYNOPSIS

Already a rising star thanks to Mystic Pizza, Julia Roberts catapulted to superstardom with Garry Marshall’s unabashedly sentimental yuppie-era riff on Cinderella by way of Pygmalion. When wealthy corporate raider Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) enlists spirited Hollywood sex worker Vivian Ward (Roberts) to accompany him through a week of business dinners and high-society rituals, what begins as a transactional arrangement gradually softens into an unlikely romance. Though its assumptions about class, wealth, and desire remain open to debate, Marshall’s impeccably glossy design and Roberts’ incandescent star turn helped transform this modern fairy-tale into one of the defining romantic comedies of its era.
