Once (2007)
About
“Its low-key affect and decidedly human scale endow Once with an easy, lovable charm that a flashier production could never have achieved. The formula is simple: two people, a few instruments, 88 minutes and not a single false note.” — A.O. Scott, The New York Times
SYNOPSIS
Shot on the streets of Dublin in just 17 days, John Carney’s quietly extraordinary musical romance became one of the great independent success stories of the 2000s. Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová star as an Irish busker and a Czech immigrant whose chance encounter blossoms into a deeply affecting creative partnership as they write, rehearse, and record a series of songs that gradually reveal their hopes, disappointments, and unspoken feelings. Eschewing Hollywood convention in favor of naturalistic performances and disarming emotional honesty, Once allows its music, including the Academy Award-winning “Falling Slowly,” to express what its characters cannot. Intimate, heartfelt, and profoundly humane, it is a rare love story that finds as much beauty in possibility as in fulfillment.
