SYNOPSIS

Charles Dickens meets Kermit, Gonzo, and Miss Piggy in Brian Henson’s enormously charming The Muppet Christmas Carol, a holiday favorite that manages to be both unmistakably Muppet and surprisingly faithful to the spirit of its literary source. Michael Caine plays Ebenezer Scrooge with complete dramatic conviction, surrounding his miserly Victorian businessman with a felt-and-fur ensemble that includes Kermit as the long-suffering Bob Cratchit, Miss Piggy as his formidable wife, Fozzie Bear as Scrooge’s old employer, and Gonzo as an unlikely Dickens himself. Guided through Christmases past, present, and yet to come, Scrooge confronts the loneliness produced by a lifetime of bitterness while his Muppet companions puncture the gloom with songs, slapstick, and characteristic anarchy. Marking Brian Henson’s feature directorial debut following the death of his father, Jim, the film carries an undercurrent of genuine melancholy beneath its abundant warmth and humor.
