    SYNOPSIS

    Released to modest expectations before becoming one of the great word-of-mouth sensations of the 1980s, Dirty Dancing remains the rare crowd-pleaser equally powered by romance, music, and social observation. Set during the summer of 1963 at a Catskills resort, it follows Frances “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey), an idealistic teenager whose sheltered worldview begins to expand after she falls for the resort’s rebellious dance instructor, Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze). Beneath its irresistible soundtrack and iconic dance sequences lies a surprisingly sharp coming-of-age story, one attuned to questions of class, desire, and self-determination. More than three decades later, nobody has put Baby in a corner.
