Rushmore (1998)
About
“Stylistically fresh and full of sweetness that never cloys, this is contemporary Hollywood filmmaking at its near best.” — Jonathan Rosenbaum
“A work of loopy, original comic genius.” — Andrew O’Hehir, Salon
SYNOPSIS
Wes Anderson’s breakthrough feature announced the arrival of one of American cinema’s most distinctive voices with this bittersweet coming-of-age comedy. Jason Schwartzman stars as Max Fischer, an impossibly ambitious fifteen-year-old prep-school student whose endless extracurricular pursuits mask academic failure and profound loneliness. When Max finds himself entangled in an unlikely rivalry with wealthy industrialist Herman Blume (Bill Murray) over the affections of teacher Rosemary Cross (Olivia Williams), Anderson transforms adolescent heartbreak into a poignant comedy of wounded pride, arrested development, and unexpected grace. Buoyed by a pitch-perfect British Invasion soundtrack, immaculate visual compositions, and career-defining performances from Schwartzman and Murray, Rushmore is at once achingly funny and quietly melancholic, establishing the whimsical, deeply humane sensibility that would come to define Wes Anderson’s cinema.
